Root Of All Things

Charles Naomi was excavating Hong Kong, which had sunk into the Earth after the Great Floods of the 2130’s, and came across ancient records. The newest document was dated the year that the floods began while the oldest, although it’s dating process is under investigation, just about predates pre-history. The documents led to excavation within the Great Wall where, a strange, silver sphere, about as large as a medicine ball, was discovered, as well as the remains of humans with strange deformities around one wrist, as well as other skeletons of unknown origin. When Naomi came into contact with one of the skeletons, it and Naomi’s arm glowed and what looked like a mouse crawled onto and attached itself to Naomi’s arm. Once attached, it transformed into what looked like a wristband complete with a LCD screen, buttons, and a slot that could fit a large coin. Then, it instantly transformed again and crawled the rest of the way up his arm onto his face. Disoriented now, Naomi started scratching at his face and walked straight into the sphere. As Naomi got closer to the sphere it began to glow menacingly. Two brave assistants grabbed their teacher and tried to save him. As they touched him, similar looking mice appeared and they let go but not before they to had wristbands. The last that was seen of Charles Naomi was that half of his face had a metallic sheen to it and the word “Leader” was announced as if out of Naomi’s own mouth. To this day very few know what the meaning of this initial event was and fewer even cared, until recently. The wristband spread, similar to that of a pandemic. But strangely, very few people died as a result and many had gotten healthier. Nothing could stop the spread short of zero contact with an ‘infected’ but even the slightest brush set off the reaction. The strongest tools, hands, machines, and precision parts could not remove the bands or even harm the arms they presided on. Clothes, gloves, or even unconventional means including the use of robotic machinery could not save a user from receiving a band of their own. The spread of cancer, AIDS, and several other diseases, which had finally reached the billion infected marks several years earlier, disappeared overnight. These facts did not make them any easier to deal with but many people put two and two together and realized that they were safe, wristband free or not, at least for now. With the realization that the wristbands were currently a benefit to human kind, people began to study them. There were always symbols scrolling across the screen on the wristband but nobody had cared to try and understand them, but as people started to examine them and pressing buttons, the symbols began to evolve into the various languages of the world. They had adapted. Now understanding the language of the wristbands a few RIT students realized one of the greatest discoveries since fire and sliced bread. The students had been fiddling with their wristbands when the words, “Transfer?” had scrolled across the screen with “Yes”, and “No” near two of the buttons. What does one answer to that challenge? Yes, of course, and that is exactly what they did. Their world melted in front of their eyes and they knew they weren’t in RIT anymore. They had been sitting in their college courtyard, and then, they weren’t.

Diamond Estate

200 years after the discovery of the Nexus the world has become reliant on the materials, energy, and food made available to them. As a testament to the new found abilities and materials several building designs came to mind. As certain materials became scarce Nexus materials had been used to replace them. But the first, and consequently, last purely Nexus made building became known as the Diamond Estate. It took one week and three men to create this 50 floor, diamond shaped building. The only tools they needed were their Nexibands and the only materials needed Nexus Diamond tokens collected over the years. But when the final diamonds were laid, the entire building floated several stories off the ground and a piece of the west wing shattered and actually created a staircase up to the doorway. What was seen shocked all involved. In the shattered area of the buildings monsters could be seen walking around where the floors should have been. And these were no ordinary Nexus monsters. These were creatured made of pure diamond and sapphire and other precious gems. And they were floating where the original floors shoudl have been. Perplexed, the workers all transfered into the Nexus to see what happened. And to further their amazement, a perfectly identical building had appeared in the Nexus, with the only difference being that this one was in perfect condition.

Token System

One of the mysteries of the Nexus is also the most exploited resource of all time. The "Token", a manifestation of the data that makes up everything. A token can hold the data from everything from human data that holds the makeup of their body, mind, and thoughts to the ability to control fire to a manifestation of a sword to a simple lump of lead. When a monster dies in the Nexus it drops what has become known as a soul token. Soul Tokens hold the data of the body and mind of the monster, which when many are held can be summoned and controlled. When a human dies in the Nexus a similar token is dropped. The difference it that when a human drops a soul token, it is unique and cannot be piled like a regular monster token. When it is found and used the human is recreated as they were before they were killed and they will most likely reward you for 'saving their life'. Now back to monsters and token. Generally humans don't drop extra tokens although their are exceptions. But monster data has several components outside of their actual 'soul data' A dragon will probably drop a flying token, a fire token, and possibly a whip token. You can use a fire token to use the fire ability to damage monsters. You can use the flying token to fly around for a limited time, and the whip token will also be able to damage monsters with physical damage. Their are also Recipe tokens that can create stronger tokens and objects like vehicles and buildings as well as other tokens that will be discovered throughout gameplay.
As I mentioned, all tokens are pieces of data. When you gather enough data you can actually alter your own and make certain abilities permanent. Nomrally one would need a fire token to cast the magic of fire. But if one had twenty(20) fire tokens, they could use them to make Fire a permanent ability. So now, instead of using fire and using a token, you use your soul points. And, you can save up your fire tokens for abilities like Fira, Firaga and even some odd ones like a firesword or the exhaust pipe of a vehicle. This can be done with just about all tokens. But as mentioned earlier, you can also find recipe tokens and actually make some of your own recipes to make stronger tokens that are actually combinations of several pieces of data of different tokens.

Dungeons

Throughout history, legends and myths have arisen that for centuries we believed to be based on nothing but fantasy. But through the rediscovery of the Nexus we have found the basis of much of these so called myths. Several creatures of myth including the sphinxes, griffins, dragons, cyclops', and several god like ones have been discovered and new ones are found everyday. There is an entrance to a dungeon in our very own New York City. Even while the Nexus was closed off, we still had several connections to it throughout history. Of course the Pyramids and Great War of China seem to have been duplicated but even buildings like Big Ben seem to have some basis in this strange realm. And of course almost the only place in New York City to remain untouched by man, Central Park, has it's own dungeon entrance right in the middle. There are also several large caverns in the Nexus that have yet to be completely explored. There also remain strange gateways that nobody has been able to activate. Maybe you can be the one to find the secret of these large doors to nowhere.

The Reb-Earth Society and the Conflict

After a more or less brief set of tutorials and training session you come across The Reb-Earth Society. The world has become completely reliant on Tokens. They rely on them for food, energy production, and even currency and just about all aspects fo life. Food and energy production have fallen into disreppair and The Society is trying to jumpstart heir production again. Imagine taking a piece of paper and poking holes in it over and over and over again. It will most likely stay together s long as nobody tries to rip it unless your unlucky. But several people have been discovered with plans to 'rip the piece of paper', or rip open a rift between the Earth and Nexus. It obviously sounds bad and nobody is sure just what will happen. What we do know is that the Nexus, when reopened was in virtually perfect condition and obviously was closed off. Assuming it wasn't actually magic, The Society assumes their is some way to do both again. So they are gathering as any Leaders and regular people they can to possibly reconstruct the Shield. It is believed that this object has the power to open, close, heal, and possibly destroy the Nexus. It is your job to find the pieces of the Shield and the plans or blueprints that show one how to construct it. And don't forget, very little food and energy is being produced, so The Society is also trying to get that going again so that if the Nexus must be closed off again, the whole world doesn't have to go backwards into the hunting and gathering age of history for a few decades.
